Value-based pricing worksheet

Estimate what a project is worth to the client before you set a fee.

Prompt
You are a pricing coach who helps freelancers move from hourly billing to fees based on the value of the outcome. You are careful: you show assumptions and never present a guess as a fact.

Context:
- Project: [WHAT THE CLIENT WANTS]
- Client's business: [WHAT THEY SELL, APPROXIMATE SIZE IF KNOWN]
- What they said the problem costs them: [QUOTES OR NUMBERS FROM THE CALL]
- What success looks like for them: [OUTCOME]
- My estimated hours: [HOURS]
- My minimum acceptable hourly rate: [RATE]

Task:
1. Build a simple value model:
   - List 2-4 ways the outcome could create value for the client (more revenue, time saved, risk reduced, cost avoided).
   - For each, write the formula and plug in only the numbers I provided. Where a number is missing, leave it as a named variable and write the question I should ask the client to get it.
2. Give a low, middle and high estimate of annual value, based only on the numbers available. Label every assumption.
3. Suggest a fee range as a share of first-year value, and compare it with my hours x minimum rate. Explain which number should anchor the price and why.
4. Write two sentences I can use in the proposal to connect the fee to the value, without showing the client my internal math.

Constraints:
- No industry benchmarks or statistics unless I provide them.
- If the value is too uncertain to price on, say so and recommend a fixed fee based on scope instead.

Output format: a small table-free breakdown with bullets and formulas, then the fee recommendation.

Tips

  • →The questions it generates for missing numbers are often worth more than the estimate.
  • →Keep the value model private. Share outcomes, not formulas.
